Merry Christmas 2009 - and a happy New Year
Students who have been with me for several years will know that I normally order a Christmas earthenware object (eg ashtray, pencil holder...) from Buño, a small village in Galicia. I then collect the order and distribute the presents by messenger. In 2001 I tried Lowry prints. One year I asked the supplier to send me the Buño presents by lorry but half of the objects were broken in transit.
Unfortunately some presents are also broken when I use my own messenger service, so this year I have changed the contents.
We started 2002 with the euro and ended with an ecological disaster. The 2009 world economy has left many people in a 'sticky situation' so when I saw the multicoloured transparent flags I knew that it was necessary to prepare to flag up another sticky year in 2010 ( more phrasal verbs...). The manufacturer of the flags is 'Golondrina' and in English we say "One swallow doesn't make a summer' - the same as the Spanish expression "una sola golondrina no anuncia el verano" (more proverbs...). Some politicians prefer to talk about 'brotes verdes'
The biros have either a poppy photo (taken near our house in Yunquera de Henares) or sunflowers (that were near the château where I went for an intensive French course). Almost all of the objects including the fridge magnet are pure merchandising!
